Note1

Slavery is when you are forced to work against your will. I think that slavery exist because people needed hands to work the fields. By taking the slaves from Africa this made picking cotton or managing crops much easier. They used slaves to pick crops, cook, and clean around the house.

I think it still exist because people have gotten used to have slaves to all there dirty work. Also because they got used to having the slaves under their control. They beat the slaves till blood ran down to their feet when they stepped out of line. If a runaway slaves were caught they were beat severely and sometimes got a body part cut off. I think they used this to send a message to other slaves.
Another reason why slavery still exists is because there aren’t enough people trying to stop it. I personally am against slavery. Making people work for you against their will is wrong and demeaning. The beatings that they give the slaves are gruesome and makes you want to vomit. I think everyone should just ban together and get rid of slavery. But of course they wouldn't do that because the South makes most of its profits off of cotton.
Note2

One of the people that I heard about was Gabriel Prosser. He led the first revolt that was actually talked about. In 1800 he decided that he wanted that he wanted to take over Richmond, Virginia by using violence. His plan was to take over an armory and give the weapons to the rebels that were with him. On the day of the revolt he was betrayed, the bridges that they were going to use to get in to Richmond were destroyed. The next day he was attacked and hung by the state militia.
Another person that I heard about that resisted slavery was Denmark Vesey. In 1800 Denmark Vesey bought his freedom with money that he won from a lottery. Afterwards he became a carpenter in Charleston, South Carolina. Even though Denmark Vesey was free he still didn’t like the idea of slavery so he started to get involved in antislavery arguments. Later on Vesey became a political provocateur, then he started to organize an elaborate plan. His plan involved over 9,000 slaves most of them from nearby plantations.
The plan was to be put in motion on July 14, 1822, but his was betrayed by two of his followers. Him and 46 others including 4 white people were put to death on June 23, 1822. Another Person that I heard about was Nat Turner. Nat turner was born a slave in 1800, his mother tried to kill him at birth so that he didn’t have to grow up in the life of a slave. Nat had a strong belief in Christianity, so strong that sometimes he had visions. HE was the pastor of a church in Southampton
Virginia. Nat turner had seven disciples. One of them who’s name was Will, had be beaten so badly that he was covered with scars. On a Sunday they went into Nat’s masters house and killed the entire family except an infant. They moved swiftly through every house and killed every white person that they could find. After entering each house they gathered slaves and more weapons. When Monday came they ran into a number of whites, most of them were killed but Turner dug a cave and hid for two months. When he was caught he was hung.

Status updates.
1) In 1850 the fugitive slave act was “improved.” Now slave owners are able to retrieve runaway slaves from northern states. I personally think that this is ridiculous, when is slavery going to end.

2) Harriet Beecher Stowe’s new book came out today its called “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” I heard it was good my friend Beth already has a copy of it. -1852

3) Today the Kansas Nebraska act was passed. Now the Missouri compromise is no more, but now people are going to try to move into the new territory. -1854

4) Minnesota has become the 32nd state and it is a Union state. If things continue in this direction we might be able to abolish slavery. -1858

5) Oregon is now the 33rd state and once again it is a Union state. Now I know that we can abolish slavery. -1859
6) I am now 26 yrs. Old and the census shows that Abraham Lincoln is the new president. He’s on our side, the south isn’t too happy about this. -1860

7) Louisiana, Kansas, and Texas secede from the Union. This can’t be good for the Union, we might have a war on our hands. -1861

8) Abe was inaugurated to day on the 4th of March. I went to see the ceremony it gave me a bit more confidence about our stand against slavery
